Many residents ask why a fire engine and rescue truck both respond to emergency medical calls. The answer is quality of care! Greenacres Fire Rescue strives to serve the residents, guests, and visitors with the best care possible and always provides the closest Advanced Life Support fire engine and Advanced Life Support rescue to the emergency with staffed, competent Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Paramedics.
In an emergency medical incident, this minimum level of staffing may be necessary to treat the patient and prepare him or her for transportation to the hospital. This minimum level of staffing enables the responding crew to simultaneously complete different tasks for the patient's care. For instance, when a patient has a heart attack, hooking up the defibrillator, performing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, attaching oxygen, starting an IV, and administering lifesaving medications may all need to be accomplished quickly and simultaneously in order to give the patient the best chance for survival. By having this minimum level of personnel, the care of the patient is improved, and the preparation time before transportation to the hospital is significantly reduced. Remember, every second counts.
On some medical calls the fire engine may remain on the scene for assistance, but is available to respond to another emergency if another call comes in. In the event that another call does come in and the closest ALS Rescue to the patient is already on call, the ALS fire engine crew can respond and begin treatment to prepare the patient for transportation before another ALS Rescue arrives. The Paramedics on the fire engine are capable of completing this task because of the equipment that is in place on each ALS fire engine is the same as the Rescue truck except for the stretcher or cot.
If the original emergency call is determined to be insignificant or that minimum level of response not needed, the ALS fire engine or ALS rescue truck will return to service and be immediately available to respond to another emergency.
